Actually you can use both the advantage of the category over the post id is that you get an extra keyword in your URL and the search engines like folders that are keywords.

You can also add a phrase in your links that you want to use as a keyword. If you click on any of my post links and look at the URL you will see that they have internet-marketing in the URL. That is because my permalink is set up as:

/internet-marketing/%category%/%postname%

Just to get that extra keyword in the link.

Remember your URL is in every backlink you get so those folders work as keywords almost the same as your anchor text.

Hey Randy

Thanks. That is REALLY helpful. Yopu have raised another question in my mind though:

You suggest a Permalink of:

/%category%/%postname%

I can understand including the category makes great sense but I've been using:

/%post_id%/%postname%/

The post ID is good for me as I use it to link posts together.

So my question is can the two be amalgamated to use the post ID & category and would there be any disadvtange to doing so?

If it can be done, is there any problem changing now thee are already posts on the blog - will it justy affect future posts?

Thanks in advance
